The earthquake and tsunami in Japan 2011 (3/11/2011)

The Eastern part of Japan was severely hit by an earthquake and tsunami, and thereafter affected by the radiation leakage from the Fukushima-Daiichi atomic power plant.

Sapesi-Japan decided to allocate some of the mobile libraries that are standing by for delivery to South Africa to those areas. IBBY Japan (International Board on Books for Young people) took one bus and has started to cover the area of Fukushima Daiichi, inviting children to read books inside the bus so as to avoid the risk of exposure to the radiation outside.

The Library Association of Japan likewise borrowed another bus from SAPESI-Japan to commence library services in August to the people of tsunami struck Kesen-numa city.

An idea put forward by Mr. Frank Thompson, a member of SAPESI’s advisory panel, resulted in these actions of support to the people of Japan.
