Hand-over ceremony of 4 Mobile Library and 34,000 books to Free State. (12/31/2014)

Sapesi and the Free State Department of Education organised a hand-over ceremony in Bloemfontein. In 2014, the Free State Department of Education will, with this reinforcement, have a fleet of 11 buses including one stand-by vehicle for emergencies.

They have about 1 100 primary schools without libraries and plan for each bus to visit 40 schools, thus providing a library service to 400 of these school (that is 36% of the schools without school libraries). Considering the reality that only about 8% of South African public schools have functional libraries, this Free State challenge is remarkable.

For this achievement, a large collection of books is required. We would like to thank Sony Japan and their subsidiary companies in English speaking countries for their book donations. Aproximately 135 000 new and second-hand children’s books were shipped to SAPESI as a result of the partnership between MoU, Sony corp., Free State DoE and SAPESI in 2008.

We thank our supporters, especially the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and MOL shipping company for the buses’ donation. Also Sony companies in South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Malaysia, USA, Canada, UK, Hong Kong, and Japan, together with K-line shipping company for the global children’s book donation.
