With the help of the Department of Basic Education, SAPESI has set up Mobile Libraries in all nine provinces. In KwaZulu-Natal (13 buses), Free State (7), Western Cape (7) and Gauteng (5) around 510 schools are receiving regular visits from Mobile Libraries. The Departments of Education in Mpumalanga, North West, Northern Cape, Limpopo and Eastern Cape are currently in the process of implementing a Mobile Library service to schools, after the donation of 11 SAPESI buses to these provinces in 2011.
This means that 43 mobile libraries will be fully operational in the country as soon as these five provinces commence their mobile library services in 2013.
Through its mobile library project SAPESI assists children, teachers, and schools in the underprivileged communities by providing free and easy access to books. The Mobile Libraries travel around each province offering this valuable service, thus enabling learners to gain access to reading material. It is anticipated that the inauguration of Mobile Library services in the five additional provinces will promote public awareness and especially among parents at the schools benefiting from the service, thus re-enforcing the important message that reading is the basis of all learning.
